One winter there was an ice storm. I went to work that day because, unlike the rest of my fellow metropolitans, I don’t watch the news. My friend Allison also showed up to work along with a handful of other people in a company of 100+ employees. After we discovered that we weren’t supposed to be there, Allison and me decided to go out and see if we could find an open coffee shop before heading back to our respective homes. The snow and ice was coming down so thick that the visibility was about 20 feet. The sidewalks were covered with ice. There was a mixed panic in navigating the sidewalks… trying to move fast enough to make it to our destination without getting soaked all the way through my less than adequate winter “coat” while at the same time, trying not to slip and thoroughly break our asses on the ice. In the scramble to the Starbucks, we rounded the corner and a very large very heavy huge-ass chunk of ice about the size of a garbage can crashed onto the sidewalk about 5 ft away from us. I looked up at the building and saw that it had probably fallen from the 12th floor rooftop. At that point I realized 2 things:

1. We should probably not be out in the streets right now.
2. I am so happy that I am alive.

Celeste and me were Satan’s minions for Halloween this year. The costuming took little while to get into character. A couple hours and about 7 alcoholic beverages and 10mg of valium later, we were out on the streets, headed to a party in the East Village (abbreviated it’s “E.Vill.”… coincidence?). We stopped in to get a slice on the way since I hadn’t eaten all day except for a Lean Cuisine microwave meal. In the pizza place, we ran into his Holiness the Pope. Since I’m dressed as a demon, I can’t pass the opportunity to say something in character to his Holiness. So I look over to him and say “Your side is never gonna win.” His reply: “I think you’re mistaken, friend. We are both on the same side.” Fucking brilliant.

I thought I saw my old friend Matt Johnson while I was in Mexico. There was a wedding there at the resort that Celeste and me were staying at in Los Cabos. It looked like he was there with a wedding party that had just arrived that day? It looked just like him and sounded just like him. He was talking to a man and woman who where about 10 years older than him… old enough to be his oldest brother or sister. I didn’t have my glasses on so I couldn’t be sure it was him. I got close enough to hear him say “Yea, he’s been dead for a long time.” I got closer and saw him laugh an unfamiliar laugh that I had never known Matt to have… theatrical and somewhat forced, with head thrown back for dramatic effect. From that, I assumed it wasn’t him. But then afterwards I got to thinking that I have cultivated a laugh over the years that I didn’t have 9 years ago. People can and do change their habits, as difficult as it may be. I really wish I would have had the nerve to ask him who he was. The last time I saw Matt before this was in Brooklyn in 1997.
